FAQs

What does the test check for?

The kit tests for the key bacteria associated with hot tub and pool illness: E. coli, total coliform bacteria, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These are the organisms most commonly linked to skin infections, ear infections, and gastrointestinal illness in bathers.

Is this the same as a commercial water test?

Yes. Your sample is analysed by qualified microbiologists in a UKAS-accredited laboratory using the same methods used in professional pool and spa testing. The swab collection method makes it practical for home use - without any reduction in the quality or accuracy of the analysis.

Why can't I just use test strips?

Standard test strips measure chemical balance - chlorine, pH, alkalinity. They do not detect bacteria. Some bacteria strips exist but they have high detection thresholds, give no quantified results, and are not suitable for Legionella detection. A lab test detects bacteria at low levels, tells you exactly what was found, and gives you a professional report you can keep on file.

Do I need this if my chemical levels look normal?

Yes. Clear water with correct chemical levels can still contain harmful bacteria. Chlorine degrades quickly in warm water, struggles against biofilm, and does not guarantee microbiological safety. The only way to know your water is safe is to test it microbiologically.

I have an Airbnb or holiday let with a hot tub. Do I legally need to test?

Yes. Under HSG282 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, you have a legal obligation to ensure your hot tub water is microbiologically safe for guests. This applies to any property rented out commercially, including Airbnb and holiday lets.

HSG282 compliance requires microbiological testing carried out using a UKAS-accredited method. For this level of testing, please visit our commercial water testing service at bestwatermonitoring.co.uk.

How long do results take?

Most results are issued within a few working days of your sample arriving at the laboratory.

When should I take my sample?

Take your sample Monday to Thursday and post it the same day. This ensures it reaches the lab within the required timeframe for accurate analysis.

Is the kit easy to use?

Yes. The swab collection process takes just a few minutes and full instructions are included. No specialist equipment is needed. Everything required to collect and return your sample is included in the kit.

What happens if bacteria is detected?

Your report will clearly explain what was found and at what levels. Where further action is needed, practical guidance and recommended next steps will be included so you know exactly what to do.

Do you offer testing for commercial properties?

Yes. Our sister company Best Water Monitoring provides professional on-site Legionella, pool and spa, and microbiological testing for hotels, gyms, schools and commercial facilities across the UK. Visit bestwatermonitoring.co.uk for more information.
