Why Laboratory Testing?

Your hot tub water can look perfectly clear, pass a strip test, and still contain bacteria that make people ill. Here is why professional lab testing is the only way to know your water is genuinely safe.

What Test Strips Actually Tell You

Standard hot tub test strips measure chemical parameters - chlorine, bromine, pH, alkalinity. These are useful for managing your water balance, but they cannot detect bacteria at the levels needed to keep your water safe.

Some bacteria strip tests exist. But they have significant limitations:

  • They only flag contamination when it has already reached a significant level. Lower level contamination - which can still cause illness - goes undetected.
  • They give a simple pass or fail with no quantification. You do not know what was found, at what levels, or what the actual risk is.
  • They are not suitable for Legionella detection. Even the manufacturers of the most widely sold bacteria strips state this and direct users to laboratory testing instead.

A strip test cannot give you documented, quantified evidence that your water is safe. A lab test can.

Why Hot Tubs Are High Risk

Hot tubs operate at temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees C - the ideal range for bacterial growth. Bathers introduce skin cells, sweat and other organic matter that bacteria feed on. Jets aerosolise the water, turning any bacteria present into a fine mist that is inhaled by everyone in the tub.

The bacteria most commonly found in untested hot tubs include:

Pseudomonas aeruginosa - causes hot tub folliculitis, a red itchy rash that appears within hours of bathing. Also linked to ear infections. Can survive and multiply even when chlorine levels appear normal, particularly in biofilm inside the pipework.

E. coli and coliform bacteria - indicators of faecal contamination. Their presence signals a serious hygiene problem that no chemical test would ever reveal.

Chlorine helps but is not a guarantee. It degrades quickly in warm water, struggles against biofilm, and its effectiveness drops as pH fluctuates.

What a Lab Test Gives You

A professional microbiological test detects and quantifies bacteria at low levels - not just when contamination has become significant. Your results report tells you specifically what was found and at what concentration, produced by qualified microbiologists in a UKAS-accredited laboratory.

This is the same standard of testing used in hotels, gyms, leisure centres and commercial spa facilities. Our kit makes that level of testing accessible for private hot tub and pool owners, without the complexity of commercial testing services.

For Airbnb and Holiday Let Hosts

If you rent your property commercially, you have a legal obligation under HSG282 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure your hot tub water is microbiologically safe for guests. HSG282 compliance requires microbiological testing carried out using a UKAS-accredited method.

For fully compliant HSG282 testing visit our commercial service at bestwatermonitoring.co.uk.
